The State of Michigan has established several requirements that must be met in order to legally drive a motorcycle in Michigan. Michigan’s licensing program is administered by the Secretary of State’s office. There is a fee for issuing the motorcycle endorsement, which can be paid at the Secretary of State’s branch office.

The Secretary of State will issue a motorcycle endorsement for a driver’s license to a person if that person meets the following requirements.

  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Register the motorcycle at a Secretary of State’s branch office
  • Show proof of insurance of at least $20,000/$40,000 public liability and $10,000 property damage coverage
  • Pass a vision test
  • Pass a written driver’s knowledge test administered by the Secretary of State’s office
  • Complete a motorcycle safety course (if under 16)
  • Pass a motorcycle rider skills test
  • Present a completion card from a safety course or a skills test certificate within 1 year to a Secretary of State’s branch office
