Michigan Motorcycle Insurance Coverage

Our Michigan motorcycle accident lawyers represent bikers and passengers in serious accident cases.   The Michigan laws for insuring a motorcycle are different that for insurance an automobile.  Many insurance agents do not understand the legal requirements for motorcycle insurance and sell the client “full coverage,” even though this does not afford the best coverage or insurance for the biker.

Our attorneys recommend that motorcyclists purchase the following types of coverage for their bikes.  This is the best way to protect yourself and your passengers in the event of a serious motorcycle injury accident.

Liability coverage:   Liability coverage is the amount of money that your insurance company will pay out on your behalf to an injured person if you were at fault in the accident and caused an injury to another person or even a passenger on your motorcycle.   We suggest that you carry as much  coverage as you can afford to protect your personal assents in the event of an accident.  You would be surprised at how little the cost difference is to move up to higher limits.  Ask your agent about the different pricing and choose the highest that you can afford.

Medical coverage:   Medical coverage provides payment of medical expenses if you are injured in a motorcycle accident.   The medical bills can be significant, especially if hospitalization is required for accident related injuries.      If another  motor vehicle is involved,  it is likely that your  medical expenses will be paid by your auto insurance carrier or the other driver’s insurance company. For example, if your accident is not with another motor vehicle, your regular no fault insurance will not pay the bills.   We recommend such coverage especially if you have no health insurance.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage:  Uninsured motorists coverage  provides you protection and a source to receive a settlement “pain and suffering” damages if you are injured by a negligent and uninsured driver.  With so many motorists in Michigan driving without any auto insurance, this is the best way to protect yourself in an accident.

Underinsured Motorist Coverage:  Underinsured motorists coverage applies when you are injured by a negligent motorist who does have insurance, but in an amount that is insufficient to fully compensate you for the value of your “pain and suffering” claim.  For example, suppose you are in an accident and fracture your leg and require surgery.  If the at fault driver had only $20,000.00 in liability coverage limits on his auto policy, then you would not receive full compensation for your injuries.   Underinsurance coverage would then pay you a settlement up to the limits in your own policy.  Because so many Michigan drivers purchase the minimum coverage, this helps you receive a higher settlement for your case.  This coverage is very inexpensive and it is strongly recommended.

Umbrella coverage:  This coverage serves as an addition to many of the coverage types listed above.  For instance, if you carry a $500,000.00 umbrella, that means that you have $500,000.00 additional dollars in coverage for any category the umbrella applies to, on top of the amount of coverage listed in the motorcycle policy.  You may be surprised at how inexpensive umbrella coverage is, when compared with the amount of added protection it provides.
