new motorcycle inforgraphic8 162x1024 Careless Drivers Jeopardize The Safety and Lives of MotorcyclistsOur Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. motorcycle crash attorneys in Michigan recently came across an interesting infographic that visually displays how the carelessness of auto vehicle drivers jeopardize the safety and lives of motorcyclists on our roads. The devastation of a motorcycle accident can be very traumatic for the victim and their family. Common motorcycle injuries can include closed head/ traumatic head injury, spinal cord injury, broken bones, fractures, back and neck injuries, shoulder injuries, knee injuries, scarring and disfigurement, and pain and suffering.

The infographic, titled “How Dangerous are Motorcycles, Really?”, designed by Sutliff & Stout, compiles some of the most recent traffic accident statistics to show how motorcycles stack up against automobiles in road safety. In fact, the rates at which motorcyclists are injured is extremely high considering that the number of motorcyclists involved in accidents is much less than the number of automobiles involved in an accident.

Statistics in this infographic show that there were a total of 4,082 motorcycle accidents in the year 2008. Of those accidents, 127 were fatal motorcycle crashes. Other interesting statistics included are:

  • The number of motorcycles involved in fatal crashes has increases 58.8 percent since 1999 (10 year period).
  • 3,314 bikers were injured in 2008 in Michigan and 125 motorcyclists were wrongfully killed.
  • Motorcycle accidents that involved another vehicle account for approximately 56% of motorcycle accident deaths each year.

Cars often times jeopardize the safety of motorcycles on the road and statistically prove that the majority of motorcycle accidents on the road are caused by a vehicle driver. Often times, a motor vehicle driver is in a hurry and does not pay close attention to the road or keep an eye on their blind spots. Motorcycles are much smaller in size rather than the average vehicle, in turn, makes it harder to see. These are common errors drivers make that cause most motorcycle accidents:

  • When cars make left-hand turns (usually the motorcycle is going straight through the intersection, or trying to pass a car)
  • Avoiding the motorcycles right-of-way
  • Blind Spots

Have you been injured in a motorcycle accident that involves a motor vehicle? In Michigan, a claim for personal injury damages can be filed against the party that was operating the vehicle or motorcycle in a negligent manner and caused the accident. An injured motorcycle passenger can also file a claim against the negligent driver as well, whether it be the driver of the motorcycle that the passenger is riding on or the motor vehicle driver. When a biker dies in a motorcycle accident, the family can file a Michigan Wrongful Death Lawsuit.
